Driftless Defenders is a grassroots coalition of citizens dedicated to preventing the construction of high voltage transmission lines through the geologically unique Driftless Area of Wisconsin.

This what ATC wants to build across our Driftless Area

Talking Points

Is there a need for this transmission line, considering:

  • Projected flat and declining demand
  • Current actual and planned/potential supply (being retired and being built)
  • Current and anticipated technology

Is there a need for improved reliability or can this need be met through a combination of clean energy alternatives in Wisconsin?

  • Don’t simply consider “no powerline” and then each individual clean energy alternative separately. Consider them working in unison i.e. energy conservation combined with clean local energy generation.
  • Look at cleaner and sensible energy efficiency, demand response and wind power / solar energy development, including that being built today in Wisconsin, in combination as an alternative.

Consider the full, cumulative scope of environmental impacts of the line to the Driftless Area including:

  • harm to vital conservation areas
  • degradation of clean streams
  • degradation of wildlife habitat
  • degradation of other important natural resources
  • disruption of unique and beautiful landscapes
  • impairment of conservation projects and easements
